At a party, Lucy wants to dance, but Saroo does not want to. We see a flashback of Saroo's birth brother calling for him at the train station. "I hate what he's done to you," Saroo says to Sue when Mantosh leaves the table, and Sue gets up from dinner, angry. Mantosh begins hitting himself and erupts in a tantrum like when he was a child. Mantosh begins to taunt Saroo about wanting to be an expert and Saroo insists that he is different than Mantosh. Saroo does not want to, which upsets Lucy. Mantosh comes in from having a cigarette, and Lucy wants to tell Saroo's parents about the fact that he wants to find out more about his origins. "He's been hard to control, but very very smart, and, I mean, he could do anything if he just learned to control that energy," Sue says.Īt dinner, Sue, John, and Lucy discuss all of Saroo's athletic trophies. Back at the house, Sue and Lucy look at pictures, including a picture of Mantosh. At the top, Saroo has a vision of his younger self on a nearby mountaintop. He chases her up a hill, and they laugh as they go. Lucy and Saroo are visiting Saroo's parents and she invites him to come for a run. Saroo sits up in bed and looks out the window, before logging on to Google Earth and beginning to search for where he might have come from.Ģ010, Hobart, Tasmania. While touching the sleeping Lucy's hand, Saroo has a flashback to eating a mango with his mother as a child. She asks Saroo what he thinks about their classmate's idea to create a search radius and he begins dancing in a silly way. "But she just knew herself, you know?" Lucy says. On the walk home, Lucy tells Saroo that her mother died about four years prior, and that her father is mad at her mother for refusing chemo. Another asks if his parents tried to find him, in which case there might be a paper trail, but they think this is unlikely, given that Saroo does not know his last name. One of his classmates recommends he try Google Earth to find his home. He recalls that the train platform he fell asleep on had a big rain tank and was not many stops from his home. Sitting down with his classmates, Saroo tries to piece together his personal history. "I'm not from Calcutta," he says, "I'm lost." Lucy comes in and notices that he seems out of sorts. Suddenly, he remembers his brother, and begins to eat the sweet treat. She asks how to say "taxi" and Saroo goes into the kitchen where he sees some jalebi. Sitting down for a meal, the girl, whose name is Lucy, learns Indian words and customs.

But, coconut is one of my favourite smells, so it may offend you if you dislike coconut scents. It’s a light somewhat coconuty sweet scent – It’s not offensive to me and I have a sensitive nose. I’ve read lots of comments about this concealer having a coconut scent but I barely smell anything unless I put the wand right up against my nose. At the event I also had a consultation and the Primed & Poreless Pressed Powder was recommended to me to try – I’m intrigued by the idea of priming my skin with powder before using liquid foundation on top! I received a sample of the Hangover Replenishing Face Primer & Booster as part of the promotion. The Too Faced tube also has that satisfying click closure mechanism like the Urban Decay concealer. The difference in the doe-foot applicator is also apparent here – I do appreciate the thought put into the Too Face wand design. The Nars in Custard (left) has a more golden undertone, whereas Too Faced in Light is more neutral – I find the Too Faced to have a better undertone for me. The coverage is decent, not nearly as high coverage as the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer which I reviewed recently. I find this concealer to fade through the day no matter if I set it with powder or not. And if I set it with powder on top, it can tend to look dry. When I use the corrector underneath, the concealer doesn’t seem to fully set. The reason is that this concealer doesn’t play nice with other products. My preferred way to wear this is actually on its own – no corrector underneath, no powder on top. I’ve worn this various ways: on its own, over the Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector, with a setting powder. It also leaves the skin smooth looking, and doesn’t crease. The most impressive thing for me is that this concealer does not oxidize. I also found that the “open” time of the concealer is quite short, meaning that I have to work quickly to blend it before it begins to set. But there are many options on the market today from brands like Morphe, Sedona Lace, and Coastal Scents, etc). My favourite fluffy brush for blending this is the little Ecotools one that came with the 5pc Mineral set (it’s an old set, I don’t think it’s available anymore sadly. When I try to use my fingers to blend, it leaves finger marks and streaks on my skin. The best way I found to apply this is with a fluffy synthetic brush or a Beauty Blender-type sponge. The consistency of the concealer is like a thin gel lotion that stays dewy looking on the skin even after it has set. This is an interesting product, and I experienced a bit of a learning curve on how to apply it. Creates look of flawless and natural looking radiant skin.Hyaluronic Acid for a smoother, more youthful appearance.Alpine Rose brightens skin’s appearance and promotes elasticity.Coconut Water helps replenish skin’s moisture levels without over hydrating.I think Light Medium could also possibly work for me but it might be a tad too dark / yellow. I would say the colour is a decent match, about 90% but it’s just ever so slightly too light for me. I was matched to the shade Light which is the 3rd lightest shade. Medium Tan – medium/tan with pink undertones Medium – medium/tan with golden undertones Light Medium – medium with peach undertones Very Fair – fair/light with pink undertones There are 10 colours offered in this concealer as shown by the informational card I received at the event: The tip is ever so slightly floppy but nothing like the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer. The doe-foot wand is quite useful because the tip is engineered with a little reservoir to “scoop” and deposit the product onto the skin. This concealer tube has little feminine details like a gold band around the neck and scalloped details at the top of the cap, with “TF” in gold calligraphy. But the quality of the product and packaging are actually great. Their packaging just screams girly princess that seem to be more geared toward those just starting out with makeup. I’m quite a newbie to the Too Faced brand. I’ve been wearing this concealer for the past 2 weeks in various conditions and trying different methods. I was able to purchase this in advance of the launch date during a pre-launch event. The official name of the concealer is Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer, and is an extension to the Born This Way Foundation. I prioritized this review since this concealer is launching this month here in Canada.

Basie, unlike most of the other territory musicians, was not a native Midwesterner. The most important piano player and the most important band leader to emerge from Kansas City was William "Count" Basie. The owner of the Sunset Club and other clubs was Piney Brown, who would come to be the archetype of the Kansas City sound through Turner's "Piney Brown Blues" ("I dreamed last night/I was standin' on 12th Street and Vine/I shook hands with Piney Brown/And I could not keep from cryin"'). Turner was the bartender at the Sunset Club, where Johnson played piano, and he sang from behind the bar, with a powerful voice that needed no amplification. While blues was a prime ingredient in all Kansas City jazz, perhaps the foremost purveyors of Kansas City blues were pianist Pete Johnson and blues shouter Big Joe Turner. The two great piano influences on the Kansas City players were ragtime (ragtime composer Scott Joplin was a Missourian) and blues. Williams was one of many significant piano stylists who flowered in Kansas City. Kirk's band, which included Don Byas, Howard McGhee, and Fats Navarro, and was noted for the arrangements of piano player Mary Lou Williams. After his own group disbanded, Page played with Moten and Basie. The Blue Devils included Young, Smith, Hot Lips Page, Count Basie and Jimmy Rushing. Page, a bassist, pioneered the "walking" bass style that became the rhythmic underpinning of swing and bebop. Other important Kansas City bands included Walter Page's Blue Devils and Andy Kirk's Clouds Of Joy. This left a good deal of room for solo work, and some of the most important soloists in jazz developed within the Kansas City bands, including Coleman Hawkins (who left Kansas City early, in 1922), Ben Webster, Herschel Evans, and most importantly, Lester Young and Charlie Parker. Kansas City jazz typically featured a full, big-band sound, with simple arrangements that were based on riffs, or two-to four-bar musical phrases, rather than on fully developed melodies. Moten's band became a model for the Kansas City sound, which was based on ragtime and blues. The first major Kansas City bandleader was Kansas City native Bennie Moten, whose band included during its run of ten years (1922-32) such musicians as Walter Page, Hot Lips Page, Eddie Durham, Eddie Barefield, Count Basie, Ben Webster, Buster Smith, and Jimmy Rushing. It was estimated that in the mid-1920s, in the area centered by Vine Street and bounded by 12th Street to the north and 18th Street to the south, there were at least 50 clubs featuring music at any given time. As a result, many of the important territory bands, such as Page's (originally from Oklahoma City) made their way to Kansas City, where clubs were open 24 hours a day and the music never stopped. Pendergast's high tolerance for corruption led to a wide-open city during the Prohibition era, which became a center for anyone looking for booze, gambling, prostitutes, or entertainment. Kansas City, Missouri, became the most important of the territorial centers with the ascension of the political machine run by Tom Pendergast. Musicians who got their start in the territories included Earl Bostic and Buster Smith. Jesse Stone, later the chief producer at Atlantic Records, and Walter Page were among the best known of the territory bandleaders. The rapidly spreading popularity of jazz in the 1920s led to the rise of the "territory bands," bands located throughout the Midwest and Southwest, which designated a specific city, often a small one, as home base and played dance dates throughout the surrounding territory. Jazz flourished in Kansas City during the 1920s and 1930s, becoming a key part of a significant happening in American sociopolitical history, as well as an important musical style. The Las Vegas Pinball Museum – Las Vegas, NV See more info here on this Alameda pinball museum. And hey, there’s a twofer deal on Tuesdays! The Pacific Pinball Museum is open every day except Mondays and major holidays. They also have vintage jukeboxes and curated pop culture/art exhibitions. This is a non-profit enterprise, so when you pony up $22 for a single, $15 for a student, or $55 for a family of four, you’ll support a fun place for people to gather and not executive bonuses. Games are presented in chronological order and historical display from the 1940s to today. The Pacific Pinball Museum is an interactive museum with 90 playable pinball machines. You’ll have a few days to rest up though unless you strike gold in a midwestern USA bar: none of these are in the middle of the country except for one outside of Detroit. You could put together a whole USA road trip based on this list, so we’ll start in the west and head across the country. If you want to spend hours hitting the flippers and bumping the machine strategically without tilting, here are some of the best places to play pinball in the USA, “pinball museums” where you can hit the flippers until your arms cramp up. At any of them, at least one machine will probably be out of order at any given time. Now, in most of the spots listed in this pinball places article, there’s a full-time person on site keeping the machines rolling. In the old days there were roving technicians who spent all day making repairs, traveling from bar to arcade to pool hall. Pinball machines take up more room than most (but not all) video games, plus they are much more complicated machines. It wasn’t just changing tastes that led to a decline though. (See more about that in Sheila’s post on the National Videogame Museum.) They just don’t do the huge sales numbers they used to back in the days before Pac-man, Asteroids, Centipede, and Donkey Kong started taking their place. Pinball is not a dead form of entertainment: new machines are still coming out all the time, like that one pictured here that I just spotted in a local brewpub in Tampa Bay. Most of them are tagged as pinball museums, but they’re arcades where you can actually play with the exhibits. Are you a budding pinball wizard or are you an oldster like me who prefers the tactile feel of those machines over the bits and bytes of video games? Fortunately for you, there are still some great places to play pinball in the USA. Write, run, integrate, and automate advanced API Tests with ease. These all come from the Gothic □□□□□□□□ (ulbandus), but from there the etmological trial gets a bit hazy, as they quite often do. Words from camel in other Slavic languages come from the same root: верблюд (verbljúd) in Russian and Ukrainian, вярблюд (vjarbljúd) in Belarusian, wielbłąd in Polish, and so on. In Czech the word for camel is velbloud, which comes from the Proto-Slavic *velьb(l)ǫdъ / vъlьb(l)ǫdъ (camel), from the Gothic □□□□□□□□ (ulbandus – camel), from the Latin elephantus (elephant), from the Ancient Greek ἐλέφας (eléphas – elephant). Well, words for camel in Slavic languages like Czech and Russian possibly come from an Ancient Greek word meaning elephant. What do elephants and camels have in common? Maybe I should add a page about it to Omniglot.ĭo you know any other words of gibberish in English or other languages? My friends and I sometimes talk in gobbledygook just for a laugh. You can hear a bit of gobbledygook in the latest episode of the Radio Omniglot Podcast, which I recorded yesterday, and edited today. To talk gibberish is dire du charabia, baragouiner or bredouiller. In French equivalents of gibberish include charabia, galimatias, amphigouri, blabla and foutaise. Gibberish is possibly onomatopoeic in origin, imitating to the sound of chatter, or from the the Irish word gob (mouth). Other words for gibberish include gobbledygook, claptrap, jibber, jabber, jibber-jabber, folderol, twaddle, hogwash, bunkum, blabla, humbug, mumbo-jumbo, jargon, babble, double Dutch and nonsense. When someone is talking in a way that doesn’t make sense to you, is using specialist jargon, is speaking a foreign language you don’t know, or is using made-up words, you might say they’re talking gibberish. Yesterday I found that matriculation and mātrīx were connected, which inspired me to write this, but I wouldn’t have guessed that mātrīx and māter were also connected. I never know what connections I’ll find when I set off on an etymological adventure like this. The English word matrix comes from the Latin mātrīx, either directly, or via the Old French matrice (pregnant animal). Mātrīx comes from Latin māter (mother, woman, nurse, motherland), from the Proto-Italic *mātēr (mother), from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr (mother), which is the root of words for mother in many languages. This comes from the Latin mātrīcula (public register), a diminutive of mātrīx (uterus, womb, source, origin, list, register). The word immatriculation means registration, and comes from the word immatriculer (to register), which comes from the Medieval Latin immatriculare (to join). Yesterday I learnt that the French for a number plate / license plate / vehilce registration plate is une plaque d’immatriculation. The name Nottingham comes from Snotingaham – Snot’s people’s (inga) homestead (ham). Apparently an old Brythonic name for that area was Tig Guocobauc, (Place of Caves). Perhaps a better Welsh name for it would be Caerddewi (Dewi’s fort).Īnother interesting name that came up was Tre’r Ogof (“Town of the Cave”), which is the Welsh for Nottingham. The name was recorded as Deusberie, Deusberia, Deusbereia or Deubire in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The English name is thought to come from the Welsh name Dewi, an equivalent of David, and the Old English word burh (fort). Twmpyn is a diminutive of twmp, which means hillock, knoll, mound, pile or lump.ĭewsbury is a town in West Yorkshire in the north of England. My favourite was Twmpyn y Glori (“Little Hillock / Knoll of Glory”), which is apparently what you call Dewsbury in Welsh. I knew quite a few of them, but some were new to me. At the Welsh conversation group I went to tonight we had a quiz, part of which involved matching Welsh names for places in England to their English equivalents. |
